Group Therapy

When is (or which) group therapy is right for you?

Between your personal and professional lives, you have had many interactions with others. Your connections with others, however brief, can be complex and impactful, even to your own mental and physical health. Group therapy is an invaluable addition to individual treatment, as it provides a space to tweak, tinker, and re-examine the way you interact with others, especially when you find yourself feeling misunderstood or misrepresented. COVID has also challenged our normal ways of communicating, and so I invite you to consider the following online groups that are accepting new members.

What’s the difference between a support and a process group? Read Dr. Lee’s guest article here.

Weekly group therapy

Every week for 75 minutes, we meet online to talk about what is troubling, upsetting, exciting, or scary in our lives. The goal is to put thoughts, feelings, and urges into words and learn about yourself – and also how you impact and relate to others. If you struggle with anxiety, depression, worries, or insecurities about any of your relationships, or even ask yourself why you are stuck, this may be the right group for you. There are two group sessions to choose from, one on Tuesdays at 5:30 PM or Thursdays at 5 PM. $75/session. Contact ps********@te*********.com for a group screening.

Every Wednesday from 8 – 9:15 PM EST, a long term therapist process group for Asian Pacific Islander South Asian American identified therapists and trainees exists to deepen their understanding of themselves and how they relate to others. Given that all therapists are APISAA, it is likely that the intersectionality of culture, profession, and individuality will arise. Co-facilitator Dr. Bob Hsiung, MD. Open to those in any state and time zone. $75/session. Reduced fee for trainees. Contact as****@dr****.org to set up a group screening.

Therapists are more than just therapists – they’re human and say and do human things! That’s why there is a space for them to take off their professional hat, learn about their interpersonal behaviors and reactions in a safe and supportive environment, and practice new ways of connecting with others. This group is also open to non-traditional therapists but who inhabit the healing space, such as executive coaches, etc. $75/session. Reduced fee for trainees. If you are a healer, please contact te*********@gm***.com to set up a group screening and discuss which group is right for you.

Monthly group therapy

We previously hosted a monthly drop-in support group for Asian/Pacific Islander/Desi American identified therapists and trainees. At present, there are only weekly groups available.

COVID-19

As a physician, I convey to my patients and groups on how to take care of themselves and hope that this translates into increased resilience admist pandemonium and misinformation.

Staying safe and healthy during these uncertain times:

  • Wash your hands before and after physical and sexual contact with others, handling food, and going to the restroom.
  • Cover your nose/mouth when in public and when around vulnerable persons (i.e. elderly, pregnant women, persons with medical illnesses, etc).
  • Clean and disinfect all frequently touched surfaces.
  • Consider getting vaccinated, as it’s the best way to minimize spread and a severe course of COVID.
